The Basic Techniques You Need For Creating Nail Designs

By Miguel Rivera

Nail art has become incredibly popular in recent years. It's an easy and economic way to give free rein to your creative juices. It also adds something special to your look and it's a great way to use all those bottles of polish that you can't resist buying. Getting it done by professionals can become very expensive, though. Luckily you don't have to be a Picasso to create stunning nail designs. Even the most basic techniques look striking and they form the basis of more complicated designs as your skills improve.

The most important items to have in your arsenal are a variety of polishes. You should have lots of different colors, so you might want to stick with the cheaper brands. You'll definitely need at least one white and one clear polish too, for base and top coats respectively. Have plenty of acetone-based remover handy. A great way to avoid having to clean up messy cuticles afterwards is to first rub some petroleum jelly into them. Any excess polish can then be rubbed right off once it's dry.

One of the most basic techniques to master is how to make gradient nails. Gradient nails look great on their own or as the base for more intricate patterns such as animal print. Apply a white base coat and let it dry. Then simply paint lines of different colors onto a make-up sponge and press the sponge onto your nail to transfer the colors.

For soft texture, try watercolor nails. First apply a base color. Then paint little dots of other colors onto the base. Lightly press a paintbrush dipped in acetone onto these dots to dissolve the polish and make it flow like watercolor paints.

Spatter nails are fun but messy to create. Apply a base color first. Then pour a contrasting color into a small container and add a bit of remover to thin it. Dip a toothbrush into the mix, hold it over the nail and stroke the bristles with your finger to create a spatter effect.

Basic patterns such as daisies, roses and leopard print are surprisingly easy to create. You'll need a toothpick or a very fine paintbrush for these. You can just take a regular paintbrush and cut it until it's fine enough.

The internet is a great resource if you want to learn how to create a specific design or just need inspiration. Some sites offer tutorials in video format. Others use photographs and step-by-step instructions to help you create stunning nail art.
