A Healthy Diet That Can Reverse Insulin Resistance

By Amanda Brown

All the food we consume is eventually turned into glucose which is used in producing energy for body functions. This glucose cannot find its way into blood cells if the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin. This has seen millions of people exposed to serious life threatening conditions like kidney diseases, blindness, disorders of the nervous system, etc. The good news is that it is possible to reverse insulin resistance.

Making the right food choices has been fronted as the most effective way to combat diabetes. According to nutritionists, processed foods worsen diabetes. Processed carbohydrates are of a lower quality because processing destroys the essential components. The processed foods to avoid include pizzas, chips and others that are preserved using sugar.

Products made from wheat flour rank high in the glycemic index. They are classified alongside candy, soda, white rice, white potatoes and a range of cereals. Sugar should also be avoided and the consumption of both caffeine and alcohol limited. There are fruits with a very high concentration of natural sugars. They include nectarines, peaches and bananas. These fruits should also be avoided.

Cruciferous vegetables and the leafy greens are excellent in stabilizing sugar levels in the blood. The concentration of minerals, vitamins, phytochemicals and antioxidants is admirably high. The level of insulin in the blood is affected by magnesium deficiency. The leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables like collard greens, spinach and broccoli contain the right amounts of magnesium. These vegetables help in detoxifying the body and will protect the body from cardiovascular diseases.

Spices and herbs also join the natural compounds that effectively reduce diabetes in the body. Two spices have been identified through research as effective in fighting off diabetes. Cinnamon specifically reduces the level of sugar contained in blood. It also helps in keeping away cardiovascular diseases. Turmeric has been in use for centuries in different communities. It is effective in protecting the liver. The components found in turmeric act as antioxidants beyond providing anti-inflammation properties.

Fruits and vegetables are not only healthy for the body but they reverse diabetes. They come with anti-inflammation and ant-oxidant properties that reduce the adverse effects of diabetes. Some of the excellent fruits to consider are mango leaves, blue berries and Indian goose berries. Some of the benefits offered by goose berries include curbing cardiac related complications, reducing hyperglycemia and promoting proper functioning of the pancreas. Mango leaves are also excellent in checking glucose level.

Besides the joy of chewing on nuts, grains and beans, they are excellent in reducing blood sugar levels. Whole grains are considered the best option as opposed to processed ones. Excellent grains for reducing the effects of diabetes include buckwheat, wild rice, amaranth, barley and oats. Cannellini beans are another health option because their consumption does not raise the levels of blood sugar.

Intake of the right foods is not enough if they will not be taken in the recommended manner. Plan the meals such that you have a bite every four hours. Avoid heavy foods three to four hours before going to sleep. Exercise is another way of making the body less sensitive to insulin levels. Work with a professional, especially one who specializes in meals for diabetics when designing your meal time table. The specialist should provide a customized timetable based on your needs and health condition.
