What Counts As HCG Allowed Food

By Diane Rogers

A persistent diet craze uses a naturally-occurring hormone with a greatly reduced calorie meal plan to burn fat and accelerate weight loss. Although health professionals often say that human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) does not affect metabolism, others attest to its benefits. While on the plan, dieters stick strictly to hCG allowed food for their two meals a day.

You can have two meals a day, lunch and dinner. Each will contain 250 calories, which seems like enough to keep a canary happy. This 'starvation' diet allows no butter or oil, and all fat must be trimmed off the meats you can eat. No sugar is included. The hCG supplement comes in pellet, spray, or liquid form.

There are four food groups from which one food may be chosen for a menu. One is protein, one bread, one vegetable, and one fruit. This means that the meal, although very restricted in calories, is a balanced one. This kind of starvation diet is not recommended by most health professionals, but people continue to try drastic methods to lose weight and burn fat.

The bread might be a surprise, but don't get excited. The choice is one round of Melba toast or one bread stick. The crunchiness might be welcome as you force your body to live off its own fat stores, and the flavors will complement the vegetables that make up the bulk of your meal.

The protein can be a small piece of grilled veal or beef, white fish, or chicken breast. Lobster, crab, and shrimp are also on the list. No fat can be left on the meat before grilling. This diet is not for vegans, but the fish and seafood will allow most vegetarians to participate.

Several green leafy vegetables are on the list: spinach, chard, chicory, beet greens, and green lettuce. Cucumbers, asparagus, and cabbage are allowed, as are red radishes and onions. Surprisingly, tomatoes are on the list, as are fennel and celery. This completes the list of allowed vegetables.

Fruit might also be a surprise, but this plan allows one apple, half a grapefruit, or an orange with a meal. Strawberries are also allowed in moderation. The menu allows for unlimited coffee, tea, or water. This is, of course, a diet that really makes you count calories and measure food portions. Some find that this mental discipline helps, while others find it either irksome or impossible to stick with.

This is the ultimate calorie-counting diet, which many find too much trouble. However, some feel that a strict regime is easiest to follow. Critics say that all weight loss and fat reduction can be attributed to the calorie restrictions, and that the hCG is ineffective. However, there are many people who have used this supplement and attest to its value in helping them stay on such a rigorous program. Dieters will have to make up their own minds about whether this is a viable plan for them. Anyone with health problems should consult their medical adviser before trying it.
