A Review Of Instant Self Tan Products And How They Function

By Haywood Hunter

The beauty and cosmetic industry has had a series of beauty products, but none has received as much hype as instant self tan beauty products. These are basically self tanning products that guarantee a beautiful fake tan without the high risk of subjecting the skin to unsafe UV rays from the sun or artificial rays from tanning beds. Instant self tan products have been in existence since the 60s when the first of these products were released to the market.

As time went by, and as new technology was invented, the instant self tan products were improved and enhanced to meet the consumer growing demands. Today, they are the safest alternative for those looking for an instant natural tan effect. The products that were released in the 60s and 70s were improved, and others made to accommodate the new changes and demands.

There is a wide range of instant self tan products in the market but they are generally categorized into two. Those that work on the outside and those that are designed to work from the inside out such as the pills and tan accelerators. Before looking into details how each of these categories of instant self tan products work, it is important to mention something about their functionality.

No doubt instant self tan products will provide the much needed tan effect. What they will not do is to act as a sunscreen and protect your skin against UV rays. This is because the fake tan effect does not come with the melanin that often comes with the "actual" tans. Needless to mention, when going outdoors you need to ensure you wear a sufficient amount of sunscreen to complement your instant self tan and give you the darkened tan effect that you so much desire.

First on the list are cosmetic bronzers. These are instant self tan products that are known to produce instant effects that can be washed off easily using soap and water. They are available in form of creams, powders, and lotions. One thing that should be made clear is that they are more or less a type of make-up, simply because the darken effect only lasts up to when it is washed.

The other category of instant self tan are sunless tanning products such as mists, creams, sprays and tanning lotions. These are the most popular because of their miracle-working effect on the skin. Upon application, the active ingredient Dihydrozyacetone (DHA) interacts with dead skin cells found on the epidermis to form the darkened effect.

Once the darkened effect is formed, it can last up to 10 days as the skin will change color almost immediately. The DHA is FDA approved, and is simply a colorless sugar that causes the reaction between dead skin cells and the instant self tan.

With that being said, most people have raised the issue of why the instant self tan does not last long enough as most people would want it to. Biologically, the skin has to go through wear and tear through a natural process of regeneration. During regeneration, the upper skin layer is shed and replaced with fresh underlying skin layer. This explains the reason why you might need to use your instant self tan product of choice more frequently in order to retain the dark tan effect.
