Looking At Breast Enlargement Critically

By Marissa Velazquez

Breast enlargement is the surgical augmentation of breast tissue using surgery. The augmentation is done by adding some synthetic materials and grafting fat tissues from other parts of the body. There are many reasons as to why people choose to undergo this procedure. Most commonly, women decide to have in an attempt to achieve symmetry. It is also frequently done after a period of pregnancy or after one has lost significant weight. It has been used recently as part of sex change procedures.

Just like any other form of surgery, there are a number of risks and complications that you need to be aware of if you plan on having this procedure in future. Common complications include increased risk of infection, excessive bleeding and prolonged pain. Perhaps the most feared of these complications is the development of cancer in the breasts later on. It is still unclear whether there exists any direct relationship between the procedure and cancer but scientists have suggested that mammoplasty makes future diagnoses of cancer a huge challenge.

One of the things that you need to consider seriously as you plan on having the surgery is whether or not you need to continue being reproductively active. The breast is an important source of some hormones in women and these play a major role in the maintenance of the menstrual cycle and pregnancies. Interference with the glands means that you may encounter some problems as regards your reproductive life.

Currently, there are two main types of implants that can be used. The two types all have a shell made of silicon rubber. One of the types contains soft elastic gel and the second consists of saline. The elastic gel has the advantage of giving tissues a near natural consistency. The main disadvantage is that they require a larger incision to be created resulting in an ugly scar. Those that contain saline have greater malleability and can be reshaped easily into the desired shape.

Mammoplasty is a major operation that has to be done under general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision on the lower part of the breast slightly above the crease. The lower part of the areola is an alternative route that is sometimes used. It is through this incision that a pocket for the implant is made. One the implant has been fitted the opening is stitched.

Normally, it takes a couple of weeks for one to recover from the effects of surgery. It is important to ensure that strenuous physical activities are avoided as much as possible during this period. Great care is required when handling the surgical site to avoid aggravating the injury. As long as the procedure is meticulously done, the results are usually very good.

Variations exist between different patients even when the procedure has been performed in the same centre. It is important that you understand this to avoid unnecessary disappointments. The good news is that a majority of persons undergoing the operation are satisfied with the results. A small number may require another operation in a few years.

An important component of breast enlargement that must be mentioned is self-esteem. Having confidence in your appearance and maintaining a positive outlook will help you make more objective decisions. In fact you will realize that all you need to change is your outlook of things rather than the appearance of your body.
