Basics Relating To Total Laser Resurfacing

By Laura Clark

Wrinkling and increased prominence of superficial lines are some of the features of aging skin. Excessive exposure to direct sunlight also tends to yield the same results. There are a number of treatments that are used in restoring the youthfulness of the skin by reducing the prominence of these abnormalities. Total laser resurfacing is one of the most effective options that exist in Cincinnati.

Before we look at how this method of treatment achieves its effects we need to have an idea of how the superficial lines and wrinkles come about. The underlying problem in both of these cases is the aging of collagen fibers. Collagen is an important type of connective tissue found within the skin. When the collagen ages it loses its tautness and this is reflected as lots of redundant skin.

In laser resurfacing, a beam is directed to the dermis layer where it causes damage to the collagen. The collagen will subsequently regenerate and form stronger fibers. The effect of this is a smoother texture of the skin. On average, a few weeks are needed for positive effects to be seen. Some people may require more than one session of treatment. In the event that such additional sessions are needed, they are given at intervals of six weeks.

The treatment can be used by virtually anyone as no major contraindications exist. At the same time, there is not much in terms of preparation that is required. The procedure is invasive (minimally) and may cause a bit of bleeding. For this reason, one may be advised to stop taking any drugs that may increase the risk of this side effect. Aspirin, nicotine and blood thinners are all associated with an increased risk.

In most centers, the procedure is done as a day case. What this means is that one can be released to go home on the same day. Although there is usually no pain, topical anesthesia or light sedation may be required in people who have very sensitive skin. Typically, the entire procedure takes less than an hour except when a very large area of skin is involved. In general, the side effects are fewer than those associated with other alternatives.

There is inter-individual variability with regard to the duration of time that is required for healing to take place. The main determinant of the exact time that is required is the depth of peeling. Generally, this time is usually between 3 and 7 days. There may be a bit of discomfort over the treated area but it tends to abate over time. Temporary reddening is also common among light skin individuals.

Dressings are not a must after the procedure has been conducted. However, there are some recovery products that are available. Hyper emollient creams, antibiotics and sun blocks are among those that are most commonly prescribed by skin specialists. Make up is usually helpful in persons that have excessive reddening of treated area in light skinned individuals as are bleaching agents in dark skinned persons affected by pigments.

Laser resurfacing remains one of the most popular cosmetic skin procedures practiced today. It is important to bear in mind that the results are usually affected by the magnitude of the initial problem. One session is enough for most people but additional sessions may be required if the conditions is advanced.
