Finding Paraben Free Skin Care Products

By Nelda Powers

People spend a lot of money trying to improve the quality of their skin. The theory is that what you buy will make you look younger and improve the health of it as well. However this is not always the case and some brands can do more harm than good in the long term. If you want something that will keep you looking good without long term health problems then you should consider choosing paraben free skin care products.

A paraben is essentially a preservative that is added to numerous everyday items. They have been used since the Fifties in order to prevent bacterial, fungal and other forms of growth in order to prolong the shelf life of a wide range of goods. As well as lotions and creams they can also be added to washing powder, food and a number of other items that people purchase and use on a daily basis.

It is also important to emphasise that parabens are not the only additive that can be added to a product. For example mineral oil is often added to brands and there are a number of others. This is why if you are looking for a more natural brand you need to look for something that is free of any form of preservative.

It may be tempting to ask why this is a problem. Surely if it keeps products on the shelf longer and makes them less expensive to purchase then surely this is a good thing! However while that may seem logical the reason that people are opposing them is not brand snobbery but a number of potential health issues that have been reported.

It is also important to be aware that products will not say that they contain a paraben. They will usually be listed under the list of ingredients as butylparaben or methylparaben. If you see these names on the ingredients list and you do not want something that contains a paraben then these are the brands to avoid.

What is true is that they can increase the risk of allergic reactions. Some people who have allergies can suffer inflammation as a result of being exposed to parabens and other types of preservatives that are used in a variety of products. While the reaction may not be instant the risk increases over time. This can also apply to conditions that are triggered by inflammation such as asthma or IBS.

Another problem with parabens is that they can negatively affect the skin. Over time it can become dried out. This results in an ageing effect that most people would agree is the complete opposite of what they intended to purchase a skin care product for!

It has to be emphasised that using a brand that contains a paraben does not necessarily mean you will have health issues in the future. However if you want something that is free from preservatives then it is worth looking for organic paraben free skin care products or natural options from major brands. Look online for more information and customer reviews in order to find the best ones for you.
