What To Anticipate When Recovering After Breast Reduction Ops

By Lelia Hall

If you are going for an invasive procedure, then you have to remember some things for post-operative care. These are the things that you should anticipate during your down time after a breast reduction procedure. While you are recovering, you have to listen to the instruction regarding these things from your surgeon. Here are what you should anticipate during your recovery period.

First, there is the issue with your drains. Drains are usually attached to you once you finish the surgery. However, this will then be removed during your first follow-up appointment with either your surgeon or post-operative care doctor. The said appointment is usually scheduled some time during the first week after surgery.

There is incision care as well. Invasive surgeries require incision. Incisions can be closed with sutures. The surgeon will have to make sure that the incisions and suture lines are dry. It is up to the surgeon to decide on the methods to use to keep these dry. You have to listen to what your surgeon tells you with regards to incision care.

Suture removal will happen right after. This is because the stitches should not be left forever in your body. In removing the stitches, the doctor in charge of your post-operative care will first check if everything is okay in the treatment area. When no problems arise, these stitches can be removed. The suture removal is usually scheduled around ten days after the treatment.

Your temperature must be monitored. You should have a regular schedule by which you will be monitoring your own temperature. Your temperature is important in your recovery because a slight rise in it would be a bit alarming already. When the temperature rises during recovery time, that may mean that an infection occurred.

Pain and soreness happens. Just like with any other invasive procedures that you can go through, you will always feel pain and soreness around the treatment area. You will feel tender and sore for several days. However, that should heal up in no time. You can just stay put while you are recovering to avoid aggravating these feelings.

Swelling is something that you cannot avoid when you are going through this invasive procedure too. The swelling of the treatment area will usually stay up to three to four months. With the swelling, others may not be able to notice it though. Most of the time, the one who will be able to notice your swelling would only be you.

You might have to experience bruising too. However, the chances of bruising is equal to the chances of not having one. You may or may not experience it. Bruising, after all, is depend on the person, how effective the administered medicine is, and techniques used for the said surgery.

Sleeping is also one of the anticipated post-operative care to remember. Once you have finished the surgery, you better sleep with two to three fluffy pillows under the upper back and head. Some people might find it comfortable sleeping in recliner chairs or wedge pillows. This is because they need to keep their torso elevated to relieve the pressure in their treatment area and reduce pain.
